If you spend any time on social media, this post will resonate with you. In light of the rampant negativity both in the news and online the last few weeks, Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers decided he’d had enough. He took to his pages to post a video to his more than 1 million fans, with a great reminder to be kind. And when they’re unkind? Do unto others as you’d have them do to you. Check out an excerpt from the video below.
“Think back to when you were a child, and your parents taught you that ‘If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.’ I have no idea what happened to that – because I read all of your posts on my page and that’s not what I see,” Jonathan said.
Though most of his followers are kind and considerate, some of them have a tendency to interact with the world in a hateful way. Those are the folks Jonathan really wanted to reach out to.
Whether the bully is an emotionally wounded individual or someone that seems to enjoy a loathsome Facebook tirad, responding to their ranting with kindness instead of rebuttal will shut them down every time. And you never know, that kindness just may do some work on their heart.
“We will never all agree on everything, but we should always be looking to see if someone’s heart is in the right place.”
There will always be people who disagree with you, no matter how strong your convictions or founded your beliefs. The trick is knowing what you believe and loving them anyway.
So how do you love someone who cuts you down, bullies, or ridicules you? Be the first to be kind and the one to stay calm.
P.S. You’ll get better with practice. The more you love the more life you have. Check out Jonathan’s video below and know you’re not alone.
